What He May Wear

The present style of evening dress has been much abused, as so closely resembling that worn by waiters. The black tail-coat, waistcoat, and trousers, and white tie, present a sombre, not to say a gloomy appearance, and furnish no scope for variety from year to year, except in the shape and cut. A little brightness has been lately introduced in the shape of coloured silk socks and shoes. An attempt was made some few years since to effect a great transformation in evening dress, and to introduce a costume somewhat of the olden style—black velvet coat and small clothes; an embroidered waistcoat, also made of black velvet; scarlet or black silk stockings, and shoes ornamented with large silver buckles. This innovation did not meet with either universal acceptance or a hearty welcome.
